The Most Important Step in Any Productivity System

Productivity isn’t about doing the most of everything, but doing what matters most.

That’s what a lot of productivity systems overlook.

However, believe me when I say I get it. Every single day there are millions of things on my to-do list and while doing the dishes isn’t the highest priority task, it still has to get done, so how do you balance the two?

The way that seems to clear my mind is to focus on getting the big things done first. The actual to-do’s that would change my life. Working on my screenplay, writing blogs, pitching new clients… The big stuff.

The little stuff gives us a false sense of productivity, and it’s an easy trap to fall into.

I’ve done it a million times myself. I sit down to write my to do list like:

  • dishes
  • water flowers
  • take dog out
  • clean kitchen

And while it feels great to constantly check things off, it’s a fake comfort if I’m avoiding doing what really matters to change my life, grow my career, and foster relationships.

It’s because those things are hard, and sometimes can make us feel inadequate, that we put them off and put them off and put them off until one day you look around and wonder why nothing has changed.

Every day, focus on at least one thing that will get you closer to a goal that truly matters. When you put your head on your pillow that night, you’ll feel a million times better.

I’m still working on finding a system that allows me to accomplish everything, from the big to the small, which is the point of this blog.

What productivity tips have been working for you? I’d love to know in the comments below.
